    Cheap Dirty Dog Blanket is a moving story of hope, love, faith and endurance. This book is not only for refugees but for everyone who has left their home to seek green pastures in a foreign land.  “A well-written and very engaging story. The author has a talent for drawing characters and for dialogue. There were parts that brought tears to my eyes. When I got to the last sentence, I did not want it to end!” – Editor’s comment

      @abbey_abby_abi – February 19, 2023

      I’m so glad that my neigbour lent me this book written by Zimbabwean author Paidamoyo Gerald Manomano. I actually couldn’t put it down.

      The story
      Hopeful for the future, Nyashadzaishe Chikomba from Wedza in Zimbabwe arrives at the South African border. He travelled by bus with others from his home country. But the behaviour of the South African Home Affairs officials quickly diminishes his hope. He pushes through though and ends up making a life for himself in Jo’burg.

      Cheap Dirty Dog Blanket describes his relationships, day-to-day living and the changes he has to make to survive. It’s a “moving story of hope, love, faith and endurance”.

      The review
      I was drawn into this book because of its characters.

      Main character
      The story is told in the first person by Nyasha and I couldn’t help but feel for this newcomer to my country. Like most others in his position, he lives from one day to the next with his main focus being to provide for his family back home. And even though he considers giving up, he does not.

      Supporting characters
      His own tenacity and the community that Nyasha finds himself in, gets him through. The characters are engaging, each one with their own back story. Each one doing what they must — not always above board — to live life as best they can.

      The author
      From living on the streets to becoming a self-taught writer, Paidamoyo Gerald Manomano has a real talent. He kept me glued to his words. I kept reading because I wanted to know what would happen next and how the story would end. The fact that it’s written in the first person allowed me to not only experience the main character’s spoken words, but also his thoughts.

      To sum up
      Cheap Dirty Dog Blanket is a well-written read. The only thing I found a tad challenging was the many footnotes. But I really can’t fault the writing, the characters or the interest level of this debut novel.

      Highly recommended.

      Cheap dirty dog blanket is a thought provoking masterpiece expertly presented in an easy way however the meaning behind it runs deep. The day to day toils of the immigrant is presented in a vivid manner which is hard hitting.

      This book really touched me, as it describes the tough journey Mr Manomano had to endure coming to South Africa and surviving, making us fall inlove with the person and feeling the hardship he went through as well.
