In this sequel to ‘Cheap Dirty Dog Blanket’, the author writes engagingly to sketch vivid images of the main character, Nyasha’s, life in Cape Town. Whether he takes us to a hotel rooftop, into a supporting character’s past, to Nyasha’s bedroom or to a man’s possessions underneath a bridge, each setting is clearly brought to life through the text, with some stories not being for the faint-hearted.
For those not in the know, the author takes the reader on a dusty walk into township life in South Africa. We get a glimpse into the ways the different South African classes and races live, and how poor foreigners live in South Afica. Manomano also creates suspense with an event some of the characters are getting ready for, but the reader has to wait a while to find out more. The story brings inspiration too, with the comforting knowledge that good people still exist.
‘That Foreigner’ is a worthwhile and interesting read. It deals with themes like loss and displacement, and shows human strength in different ways. A story of hope worth picking up.
